Day 12: Website Tracking

by Donny on March 26, 2010

Website tracking is a practice that refers to the act of monitoring your business’s website and viewing changes over a period of time.

This is useful for ANY marketer because you can see what’s working in your marketing and what’s not.

It is important for you as a business owner to know whether your website is done, whether you have any broken links or any errors on any of the pages of your website.

The more errors that you have on your website lowers the chances of you converting a visitor into something you want them to do like purchase or signup.

Tracking is useful because you can immediately see whether there is something that needs to be fixed. The consumer wants to see consistency and reliability, especially if they would like to contract the services of your company or buy your product.

Tracking all activity in a website is the difference between making no money online and millions (literally). The goal with tracking is to test small samples of your marketing and how customers are reacting to your website and then once you figure out what works, you can put a lot of money behind what works as opposed to what doesn’t.

Step-by-Step Action Plan

  1. Identify what you’d like to track about your marketing and your website, your options are below:
  1. General Traffic
  2. Pay Per Click Traffic
  3. Email Traffic
  4. Real Time Traffic
  5. Page Activity
  1. Once you’ve identified what you’d like to track, it’s time to install the programs that will track that particular area of your marketing. Your options with recommended tools are below:
  1. General Traffic – Google Analytics
  2. Pay Per Click Traffic – Conversion Tracking
  3. Email Traffic – Aweber
  4. Real Time Traffic – Hit Tail
  5. Page Activity – Crazy Egg
  1. As you can see, there are tons of different ways to track your online marketing activity and we recommend implementing every single one. Let’s assume that you wanted to implement and track your “real time traffic” or traffic that is hitting your site right now. The steps to do that are below:
  1. Visit www.hittail.com
  2. Click the button saying “Sign up for 60-day free trial”
  3. Fill in your contact information
  4. Select “60-Day Free Trial” option
  5. Copy your tracking code
  6. Install your tracking code into your website
    1. i.     You may need to work with a web developer to get this properly installed to your site.
  1. Once you have installed this code, you will be able to go back to www.hittail.com and see your traffic as it is hitting your website in real time.

Thanks Donny, hope you are well! I've been using Google Analytics for about 4 years now. It's excellent and does everything I need it to.

I know there are many other powerful tools in the market place also as you've suggested above.

Tracking is important as it help you reach your traffic and conversion goals. Without website tracking, you don't know where abouts you are in relation to your goals.

Thanks Donny,
Gavin Mountford
