Several readers have asked me which article directories I submit my site to in order to increase backlinks/traffic. Below is a list of the free article directories that are PR 4 and above. However, not all article directories are created equal.
The site that has ranks the best with Google is EzineArticles.com. Although it takes about 7 days to have your articles published with them, I find that it is worth the wait. You can pay $97 a month for premium membership and then you can have your articles looked at within a day or two. It seems expensive at first but if you are into affiliate marketing through article marketing, this is glorious. It becomes your door to thousands of dollars in extra income from the extra time that your articles are out there. Also, your articles will rank higher if you have premium membership. In other words, traffic will increase and increase faster.

I also spread it around with GoArticles, Articlebase, squidoo, and hubpages. Some people don’t take advantage of linking between their articles. This is an easy way to increase the search engine ranking of all of your submitted articles. Link between pages when it is relevant (and permitted by the article directory) and it will give you a nice boost in the rankings. I will always link to my ezine articles from my squidoo and hubpages articles, but not just by putting the links at the bottom the page. I put in a intelligent place of a sentence, where it fits and actually makes sense.
There is a common myth that if you send the same article to 1,000 different article directories that you now have 1,000 strong backlinks. Well this is just not the case because duplicate content does not help you regardless of the PR of the site that you submitted your article too. You will end up with 1 backlink from the site Google determines is the site that has the original content. Instead of submitting the same article to 10 places, re-write your article colorfully a few times and submit it to different sites while linking the pages together.
Here is a list of the article directories along with page rank. If you have the time or could outsource the work, have someone write 50 articles for you on a given subject and link between the pages. You will rock up the search engines!

Article directories rank well in search engines because they are sites that are loaded with content. Your blog will never be able to compare to an article directory and if you can’t beat them, join them.
Is it better to write a blog post on your site or submit it to a article directory?
Well, I would tell you do to both. But if you’re too lazy, it depends what type of site you have. If you have a site that is growing and will become something, put the article on your site and help your site improve. If that’s not the case, put it on the article directory. You’ll get more traffic, and if you don’t have plans for your site, that’s the better option for you.
