Building a List of Responsive Subscribers

by Donny on March 30, 2010

When operating a business or website online, it is important that you have something intact to grab the visitors or readers name and email.  A lot of business owners don’t realize the value of collecting this information.

They are losing tons of potential profits and customers.  It is a known fact that on average it takes someone 6 or 7 times to see a message before buying something.  So if you have no way to contact them or follow up with them, good chances are they want buy anything from you.

Knowing that the list churn rate, the idea that about 30% of the email address that you collect on a yearly basis seem to vanish due to changed emails, spam, email bounces, and people who unsubscribe, should be a critical element that you should know about your list, so that you can strategize to grab a higher percentage of people who need to join your list.

It has always been said that “The money is in the list” when it comes to building a successful online business.  Most people feel that advertising on their website will make them the most money.  This is definitely wrong because a website can only make a lot of money through advertising only if their website receives a bunch of traffic.

Building your list should be your #1 objective when developing online business.  This gives you the opportunity to continual contact your visitors on a constant basis along with providing special discounts, offers, and content for those that subscribe to your email list or newsletter.

It is important to build the relationship and provide useful information to your subscribers before trying to get them to purchase something.  A lot websites just like to get their subscribers to buy something first before a relationship is even built.  This is the wrong way to do this because people will quickly unsubscribe from your list and you could be identified as a spammer.

building a listIn conclusion, when developing a website, make sure you have some form or method of grabbing the name and email address of your website visitors.  It is important to recognize that your list is your business online because it gives you access to follow up with your potential customers and build that relationship with them.

Hey Donny, interesting post. I've got many lists, one of my lists is about 14,000 people. Out of those 14,000 people, only 2,000 open their mails on a regular basis. That means that 12,000 people don't look at my messages. Crazy eh?

That is why it's also so important to use Facebook, build up the relationship even more than before. People trust Facebook, they don't trust email anymore and most don't care. If you can pre-build up that relationship with people first, they are much mroe likely to buy your stuff or open your messages.

Even then, I believe that email marketing is dying very fast. People are using social networks to get their info.

Of course, if you've got a list of customers, then that's a different story as they will continue to buy from you again, but prospects... we'll they don't open their messages very often.

    Thanks Donny,
    Gavin

I know you are right and I think it could maybe be a lot simpler that we sometimes make
it out to be when adding new elements to our pages. I may have been putting too much
thought into it, too. We can change the headline around and just give away our weekly
tips pertaining to our niche or business - right? Work up a quality newsletter?

If someone finds you interesting they will join in! As we grow the value we have to share
grows too and we can make that adjustment happen...

Thanks so much for all you do

Donny - This is great advice. It is hard though trying to come up with that "attention grabbing" element that will convert to a list.
  • Great stuff for us novices Thanks Donny.
