6 Tips for Creating and Marketing Content

by Donny on July 29, 2010

You have a passion. Everyone does. Maybe you like to go cycling. Maybe you are a movie buff. If you have a passion, you probably want to tell people about it.

A good way to spread your love of something to others is by creating a blog or developing content for the Internet. You know someone will consume what you create if it is worthwhile and you market it well.

You can’t just write something and stick it on a blog and expect people to read it. You have to know how to get people interested in what you create.

1. Know What You Can Offer

Before creating any content, you need to pinpoint just what skills or knowledge you have. You need to spend time thinking about what you do best.

The content you create will be more valuable if it centers on things or ideas that you already know a lot about. In addition, it is a lot easier to create something if you don’t have to do a lot of research about it.

2. Create Content for the Web

Creating something that is used in a newspaper or on a television newscast is different than what you create for the Internet. People have very short attention spans when they browse the Web.

They are turned off by a big block of text or a video that lasts 20 minutes. You have to create content that is easily digestible in a short amount of time. Stick to your topic and don’t ramble. Give people what they need and let them move on. Remember you are writing content for websites.

3. Create Something Unique

The Internet is a vast place. You can literally find everything using a search engine. It will be easy for your content to get lost in the vast wasteland that is the Internet.

You can help set yourself apart by creating content that hasn’t already been done 30 times. Make something that you are proud of, but make sure it is different. People will be more likely to consume your content if they can’t get it anywhere else.

4. Be Easy to Find

Being easily searchable is the first step to marketing the content you create. Even if you are able to generate interest in your content, your efforts will be worthless if people are not able to find what you are advertising.

You should use Search Engine Optimization to make your content easily searchable. Using keywords in your work will help you be found. You want what you create to be on the first page of the Google or Yahoo search results when they look for the keyword you select.

5. Make Yourself Known

Although it may feel weird at first, you need to promote yourself and your content as much as you can. If you have a Facebook or Twitter profile, post links to your content on them. Tell people about your blog or content in everyday conversation. You will be surprised how quickly word can spread.

6. Browse Forums and Other Blogs

You should always be on the lookout for Internet forums or other blogs that are about the subject of your content. You can create comments on blogs that include a link to your content.

You should write posts on forums that are meaningful and instruct people to check out your content for more information. Blogs and forums already contain a built in target audience for you. You just need to get them to take the next step and actually view your content.
